SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: What’s the Difference, and Which Does Your Business Need in 2026?

Quick answer: SEO (search engine optimization) gets your pages ranked in traditional search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes your content so Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice assistants can lift it out as the direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) works to get your brand named and cited inside AI-generated responses from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode. They aren’t rivals. AEO and GEO are built on top of good SEO, and in 2026 most businesses need all three.

Why everyone is suddenly asking about AEO and GEO

Search looks different than it did even a year ago. At Google I/O 2026, Google showed a Gemini-powered redesign of Search that connects AI Overviews directly to AI Mode, so people can move from a quick summary into a back-and-forth conversation without starting over. Meanwhile ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini have become the first stop for a growing share of product and service research.

The data on clicks is hard to ignore:

  • Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches by 900 U.S. adults and found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when one didn’t. Links inside the summary itself were clicked on just 1% of visits.
  • An Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords, published in February 2026, found AI Overviews were associated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page.
  • Being cited changes the math. Seer Interactive data reported by Search Engine Land shows pages cited inside an AI Overview earned roughly 2.1% CTR, versus about 0.9% for pages on the same results that weren’t cited.

Interest is climbing just as fast. In SE Ranking’s U.S. keyword data, monthly searches for “answer engine optimization” rose from about 470 in November 2025 to about 1,900 in October 2026, and searches for “SEO vs AEO vs GEO” grew from about 50 to about 320 over the same period.

Translation: ranking still matters, but being the source an answer is built from matters more every month.

SEO, AEO and GEO, defined

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the work of helping search engines crawl, understand and rank your pages so people click through to your site. It covers technical health (speed, crawlability, indexing), on-page relevance, content, links and local signals like your Google Business Profile. Here’s how IGNITE approaches SEO.

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It’s the practice of formatting and structuring content so search features and AI assistants can pull it out as a direct answer: an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box or a spoken reply from a voice assistant. AEO favors pages that answer the question in the first few sentences, use clear question-style headings, define terms plainly and back up claims with specifics.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It focuses on large language model tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Mode, which write a fresh answer for each question and cite or name a handful of sources. GEO is about making your brand one of those sources, and that depends heavily on what the rest of the web says about you, not just on your own website.

Where they overlap (and where they don’t)

Here’s the good news for anyone worried about starting over: Google’s Search Central documentation says the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no special optimization is required to appear in them. If your site is crawlable, helpful and trustworthy, you’re already most of the way to AEO on Google.

The differences show up in three places:

  • Format. AEO rewards content that can be lifted cleanly: a 40 to 60 word answer under a question heading, a numbered process, a comparison table. Long, meandering intros get skipped.
  • Crawler access. GEO reaches beyond Google. ChatGPT search, for example, relies on OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot crawler, and OpenAI says sites that block it won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers. That bot is separate from GPTBot, which collects training data, so you can allow one and block the other. It’s worth checking your robots.txt.
  • Off-site reputation. AI answers lean heavily on third-party sources. In Pew’s study, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were among the most frequently cited sources in Google’s AI summaries. For GEO, reviews, directory listings, press mentions and industry citations carry as much weight as your own pages.

If SEO is the oil that keeps your website’s engine running, AEO is tuning that engine to reach a specific destination fast, and GEO is your reputation on the road: what everyone else says when someone asks for a recommendation.

Which one does your business need?

All three, in that order. The emphasis shifts with your business model:

  • Local service businesses (contractors, auto shops, medical and professional practices): lead with local SEO and your Google Business Profile, then add AEO to service pages by answering cost, timeline and “is it worth it” questions directly. Reviews and local mentions do the GEO work. Our guide to “near me” SEO is a good place to start.
  • E-commerce and dealerships: SEO on product and category pages, AEO on buying guides and comparisons. Comparison searches are where AI Overviews show up most: Seer’s data found them on roughly 95% of comparison queries versus about 5% of transactional ones.
  • B2B and professional services: GEO carries more weight because buyers ask AI tools for shortlists. Original research, expert commentary and industry citations are what get you named.

A 30-day starter plan

  1. Week 1: Audit. Check Google Search Console for indexing issues. Open your robots.txt and confirm you aren’t accidentally blocking Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. Then ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode ten questions your customers ask, and write down who gets named.
  2. Week 2: Make your best pages answer-ready. Add a 40 to 60 word direct answer near the top of your five most important pages, turn real customer questions into headings, and add relevant structured data (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ or Article).
  3. Week 3: Publish something AI can’t invent. Pricing ranges, a local case study, before-and-after results or a short customer survey. Original facts give answer engines a reason to cite you.
  4. Week 4: Earn mentions and start measuring. Request reviews, make sure your name, address and phone match across every directory, and pursue a mention from a local chamber, association or trade publication. In GA4, build a report for AI referrals (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO aims to rank a page so a searcher clicks it. AEO aims to have your content used as the answer itself, whether in an AI Overview, a featured snippet or a voice result. AEO builds on SEO: Google draws its AI answers from pages it has already crawled and indexed.

What is GEO vs. SEO?

SEO targets search engine rankings. GEO targets the responses written by generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, where success means your brand is named or cited. GEO leans more on your reputation across the web, such as reviews, press and directory listings.

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. You’ll also see it grouped with GEO (generative engine optimization), LLMO (large language model optimization) and “AI SEO.” The labels overlap, and the goal is the same: be the source AI answers are built from.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. Google says its AI features rely on the same foundations as regular Search, and AI tools still need crawlable, trustworthy pages to draw from. What’s changing is the payoff: fewer clicks on purely informational searches and more value in being cited. Our post on the evolution of SEO in 2026 goes deeper.

Do I need separate content for ChatGPT and Google?

Usually not. One well-structured page that answers questions clearly, cites specifics and is easy to crawl can serve Google, AI Overviews and AI chat tools at once. What differs is the off-site work and making sure each platform’s crawler can reach you.

How do I know if AI tools mention my business?

Start by asking them the questions your customers ask and recording the results. For ongoing tracking, AI visibility tools such as SE Ranking’s AI search tracking monitor brand mentions and citations across engines, and GA4 shows visits referred from AI platforms.
