LLM SEO: how to get recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google

How ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews choose which businesses to cite, and the practical steps a local business can take to be one of them.

LLM SEO: how to get recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google

LLM SEO is the work of getting your business found, cited and recommended in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. Each of these tools pulls its sources from a search index, so the job comes down to three things: make sure every engine can crawl and index your site, publish clear answers to the questions your customers ask, and keep your business details, reviews and third-party listings consistent everywhere an AI might look.

There’s no secret code. The businesses that get recommended are usually the ones that are easiest to verify. Below is how to optimize for AI search engine by engine: how each one finds sources, what gets cited, the technical setup, and how to measure it.

What LLM SEO is (and what it isn’t)

When someone asks ChatGPT for a good transmission shop near Chardon, it usually runs live searches, reads the pages it finds and writes an answer with links. That retrieval step is where you can win. What a model memorized in training is mostly out of your hands.

Google is blunt about this. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features in Google Search says AEO and GEO are just SEO as far as Google is concerned, and that AI Overviews and AI Mode run on the same core ranking and quality systems as regular results. Google’s documentation on AI features adds that no extra requirements or special optimizations are needed to appear.

So LLM SEO is solid SEO applied across four search systems instead of one, with more weight on clear answers, consistent business facts and what other sites say about you. If your SEO foundation is weak, fix that first.

How each AI engine finds its sources

Each assistant leans on a different index. That’s why a shop can show up in a Google AI Overview and be missing from ChatGPT, or the other way around.

How to rank in AI Overviews and AI Mode

To be shown as a supporting link, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in regular Google Search. Google also uses query fan-out: it breaks one question into several related searches and pulls pages from each. A page answering a narrow follow-up (say, whether a dealer services the models it sells) can earn a link even if it doesn’t rank for the main search.

Google’s guide also says an up-to-date Google Business Profile helps local businesses appear in AI responses. Treat your profile as part of your AI Overviews SEO and AI Mode SEO, not a separate chore.

How to rank in ChatGPT

OpenAI’s crawler documentation lists separate bots for separate jobs. OAI-SearchBot decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. Blocking GPTBot only opts you out of training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what keeps you out of ChatGPT’s answers.

OpenAI’s FAQ for publishers also says ChatGPT can find URLs through a third-party search provider, without naming which. Being open to OAI-SearchBot and well indexed in the major search engines, Bing included, covers both routes.

Microsoft Copilot and Bing

Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries cite pages from Bing’s index, and Microsoft now reports those citations inside Bing Webmaster Tools through its AI Performance report. If you’ve never verified your site in Bing, that’s the cheapest fix on this list.

How to rank on Perplexity

Perplexity SEO starts with Perplexity’s own crawler. Its crawler documentation says PerplexityBot is what surfaces and links sites in its results, and that it isn’t used to train foundation models. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and, if you run a web application firewall, allowing its published IP ranges too.

How to get cited by AI: content, reviews and mentions

Once an engine can reach your site, it still has to pick you over the shop down the road. These signals tend to decide it.

Clear, specific answers on your own pages

AI answers are assembled from passages that answer a question cleanly. Put the answer first, then the detail. Spell out what you do, for which vehicles or products, where, how fast, and roughly what it costs. Here’s the difference on an auto repair shop’s diesel page:

  • Vague: “We offer quality diesel services with a commitment to excellence.”
  • Citable: “We repair Ford Power Stroke, Ram Cummins and GM Duramax diesels, including injectors, turbos and EGR systems. Most diagnostics are done the same day. We serve Geauga and Lake counties.”

Google calls the second kind non-commodity content: first-hand detail and expertise, not generic tips anyone could generate. A golf cart dealer explaining which lithium conversions it installs, and why, is the kind of page Google says it wants. Google also says there’s no ideal page length and no need to chop content into tiny chunks.

Entity consistency

Your business is an entity: one name, address, phone, website, set of services and hours. AI systems cross-check those facts across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, Yelp and industry directories. When they disagree (an old address on one directory, a different name on Facebook), you look less certain and are less likely to be named. Microsoft’s AI visibility advice includes reducing ambiguity and keeping Bing Places details current.

Reviews

Ask an AI for the best collision center in town and the answer often leans on what reviewers say. Google’s local ranking guidance says review count and ratings feed into how prominent your business is, and that replying to reviews helps. Ask happy customers to mention the job and the town (“replaced the windshield on my F-150 in Mentor”), because that’s detail an AI can match to a question. Never buy reviews or filter who gets asked.

Third-party lists, directories, Reddit and YouTube

Google notes that its AI features can show what people say about a business across blogs, videos and forums. For a local business, the places that usually matter most are:

  • Manufacturer dealer locators (golf cart, marine and powersports brands).
  • Trade association and certification directories.
  • Local “best of” lists from newspapers, chambers of commerce and community sites.
  • YouTube videos that answer real customer questions, with your business name and town in the title.
  • Reddit threads and local Facebook groups, where you answer as yourself and say who you are.

Keep it real. Google’s guide warns against chasing inauthentic mentions, so skip fake Reddit accounts, paid placements posing as editorial picks and review swaps.

Technical basics for AI search visibility

Run these checks first. Most take less than an afternoon.

  1. Check robots.txt. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and confirm Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot aren’t blocked. To opt out of model training but keep search visibility, block GPTBot and Google-Extended instead. Google says Google-Extended doesn’t control Search.
  2. Check your firewall and security plugins. CDN bot settings, WordPress security plugins and hosting firewalls can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. Google and Perplexity both say to allow their crawlers at that level too.
  3. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your XML sitemap.
  4. Turn on IndexNow. It tells participating search engines, including Bing, when you add, update or remove a page. Microsoft recommends it for AI visibility, and many SEO plugins support it with one setting.
  5. Claim and match your listings. Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect should match your site’s name, address, phone, hours and categories.
  6. Add structured data that matches the page. Use LocalBusiness markup (or a subtype such as AutoRepair or AutoDealer). Google says no special schema is needed for AI features, but structured data still helps with rich results and must match what visitors see.
  7. Keep key facts in text. Prices, service lists and hours locked inside images or PDFs are harder for any crawler to read.

Here’s a robots.txt setup that allows AI search but opts out of OpenAI model training:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot

Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot

Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot

Disallow: /

OpenAI says search changes take about 24 hours to apply, and Perplexity says up to 24 hours. If a website rebuild is coming, put crawl access on the launch checklist.

llms.txt and its honest limits

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file that gives AI tools a short map of your site’s most useful pages. It’s cheap to add, and some AI agents may read it. But Google says Search ignores it: it neither helps nor hurts your visibility in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The OpenAI, Perplexity and Bing documentation linked here doesn’t list it as a requirement either. Treat it as optional housekeeping, and be skeptical of anyone charging much for it.

How to measure LLM SEO results

ToolWhat it showsLimits
Search Console Performance report (Web)Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, counted with regular resultsDoesn’t separate AI clicks from classic clicks
Search Console Generative AI performance reportHow often links to your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and deviceImpressions only; sites with few AI impressions may not see it
Bing Webmaster Tools AI PerformanceCitations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, cited pages and grounding queriesPublic preview; grounding queries are a sample
Google Analytics 4Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.comSome AI visits arrive without a referrer and show as direct
Manual prompt checksWhether you’re named for the questions that matterAnswers vary by person, location and day

Google’s help page for the Generative AI performance report says it reached all sites on August 31, 2026, and it reports impressions, not clicks. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so those visits are easy to filter in Google Analytics.

Then add a monthly routine:

  1. List 10 to 20 questions customers ask before they buy, such as “best boat dealer near Lake Erie.”
  2. Run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode. Note whether you’re named, linked or missing, and who gets named instead.
  3. Look at which pages get cited for competitors. That’s your content gap list.
  4. Add “ChatGPT or another AI tool” to your “how did you hear about us” options.

If you’d rather hand this off, our answer engine optimization service covers the crawl audit, listings cleanup, content and monthly tracking.

Common mistakes that keep businesses out of AI answers

  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot by accident while trying to block AI training.
  • Ignoring Bing because few customers use it directly. Copilot does.
  • Paying for an “AI SEO package” that is mostly an llms.txt file and schema tweaks.
  • Publishing a near-duplicate page for every phrasing of a question. Google says mass-producing pages for fan-out queries can count as scaled content abuse.
  • Trusting tools that claim to see Google’s internal AI rankings. Google says third-party tools don’t have that access.

A 30-day LLM SEO plan for a local business

WeekFocusWhat to do
1AccessCheck robots.txt and firewall settings for all four crawlers. Verify Bing Webmaster Tools, submit sitemaps and turn on IndexNow.
2Business factsMake Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook and top directories match. Fix structured data.
3AnswersRewrite your top five service or product pages so each opens with a direct answer. Add an FAQ section built from real customer questions.
4Reputation and baselineStart a weekly review request routine. List five third-party sites you should be on. Run your first prompt check and save it as a baseline.

Judge results over months, not days. Crawl fixes register within a day or so, but reviews and mentions build slowly. Our industry pages show how this applies to auto, marine, powersports and outfitter businesses.

Frequently asked questions

What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO is optimizing your website and online presence so AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews find, cite and recommend your business. It builds on regular SEO: crawlable, indexed pages, clear answers to customer questions, consistent business details across listings, and a healthy base of reviews and mentions on other sites. There is no separate secret formula.

How do I rank in ChatGPT?

Make sure OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, because OpenAI uses it to decide which pages can appear in ChatGPT search. Get indexed in the major search engines too, since ChatGPT can also find pages through third-party search providers. Then publish specific answers about your services, prices and service area, keep listings consistent, and earn reviews and mentions. Track visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com in Google Analytics.

Does llms.txt help with AI search?

Not much today. Google says Search ignores llms.txt, so it neither helps nor hurts your visibility in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The crawler documentation from OpenAI and Perplexity and Microsoft’s AI visibility advice don’t list it as a requirement either. It’s harmless and quick to add if you want it, but crawl access, indexing, clear content and reviews matter far more.

Should I block AI crawlers on my website?

Block training crawlers if you want to, but keep search crawlers open. GPTBot and Google-Extended relate to model training and other Google AI systems, and blocking them doesn’t remove you from ChatGPT search or Google Search. Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are the ones that decide whether you can be cited, so blocking any of them costs you visibility in that engine.
