What is AEO? Answer engine optimization explained for 2026

What is AEO? A plain-English guide to answer engine optimization, how it differs from SEO, and 7 steps to get your business cited in AI answers.

8-minute readBy IGNITE Marketing Group

Quick answer: What is AEO? AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of making your business the source that AI answer tools quote. Instead of only chasing a blue-link ranking, you structure clear, trustworthy answers so Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot can understand them, use them and cite you.

If you have been hearing “AEO” in meetings and nodding along, you are not alone. U.S. searches for “what is aeo” grew from roughly 220 a month last December to about 2,900 a month now, according to SE Ranking. Here is what it means and what to do about it, starting with last week’s news.

What happened this week: Google and Bing split “training” from “answers”

On October 30, 2026, Google added a note to its common crawlers documentation saying it intends to support a shared, machine-readable AI training preference in early 2027. The signal comes from an IETF working group draft known as AIPREF, and site owners would set it in robots.txt with the user agent __usage_ai-training. Google explained the plan in a Search Central blog post, Supporting a shared AI training control for websites.

The same day, Microsoft Bing published Your content, your choice: clearer preferences for training and grounding. Bing now treats two jobs separately. “AI training” covers using your pages to teach a model, and it can be set in robots.txt with the same shared user agent. “AI grounding” covers using your pages to help build an AI answer, and it is set page by page. Bing says neither choice changes eligibility for regular Bing results, and it plans to start honoring the new preferences on February 1, 2027.

What it means for a business owner

The big search companies are drawing a clear line between “learn from my content” and “quote my content in an answer.” That line is the whole game in AEO. You can say no to model training and still be eligible to show up and get cited in AI answers. Google’s crawler page says Google-Extended does not affect a site’s inclusion in Google Search, and OpenAI’s crawler documentation says blocking its training crawler (GPTBot) is separate from ChatGPT search, which is controlled by OAI-SearchBot.

The risk runs the other way, too. Bing warns that disallowing grounding can reduce visibility in AI experiences such as Copilot. Before anyone pastes a “block all AI bots” snippet into robots.txt, know which switch does what:

What is AEO, in plain English?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of shaping your website so that tools which give answers, not just lists of links, pick your business as the source. An “answer engine” is anything that replies to a question directly: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants. AEO asks one question of every page you publish: if someone asked an AI tool this, would our page be the clearest, most trustworthy answer it could find?

Why does it matter? Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 26 that AI Overviews now appear on more than 80% of Google searches, citing Semrush tracking, up from about half in mid-2025. A Semrush study of 400 commercial keywords in U.S. desktop results found AI Overview coverage rose from 45.75% in September 2025 to 88% in August 2026, with “best X for Y” searches at about 96%. Those are the searches local businesses want to win.

What does AEO mean in marketing?

In marketing, AEO is a layer on top of your SEO plan. It shifts the goal from “rank on page one” to “be the answer and get the mention” through question-and-answer content, consistent business facts and strong trust signals.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO is the oil that keeps your website’s engine running: crawlable pages, fast load times, useful content and links that prove you are legitimate. AEO does not replace any of that. It uses the same engine but tunes it for a different finish line. SEO measures rankings and clicks. AEO measures whether your business is quoted, cited or recommended inside the answer itself, often before anyone clicks.

Google is direct about the overlap. Its AI features guide for site owners says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page simply has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. As the guide puts it, “There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.” In other words, good AEO starts with good SEO. How to optimize for AEO: a 7-step plan for small businesses

  1. Check that the right bots can reach you. Open your robots.txt and confirm Googlebot, Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed. Decide separately, and on purpose, how you want to handle training crawlers like GPTBot and Google-Extended.
  2. List the questions customers actually ask. Pull them from phone calls, emails, reviews and your front counter. “How much does it cost?”, “How long does it take?” and “Do you service my area?” are AEO gold.
  3. Answer each question in the first two sentences. Put the direct answer up top, then the detail. AI tools pull from text they can lift cleanly, so avoid burying the answer under a long intro.
  4. Use question-style headings. Headings that match real searches, plus a short FAQ section, make it easy for both people and machines to find the right passage.
  5. Keep your business facts identical everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours and services should match across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directories. Google’s guide specifically mentions keeping Business Profile information current.
  6. Show real expertise. Add author names, credentials, photos of your work and specific details only someone who does the job would know. Our post on E-A-T in SEO covers why trust signals carry so much weight.
  7. Check your visibility every month. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode the questions your customers ask, and note who gets named. Track changes over time instead of judging a single answer.

What is an AEO audit?

An AEO audit is a check-up on how answer-ready your site is: crawler access, indexing, how clearly key pages answer common questions, consistent business information, trust signals, and how often AI tools mention you versus competitors. The output should be a short, prioritized fix list.

What does an AEO strategy look like for a local business?

For most small businesses, an AEO strategy is a handful of habits added to existing SEO work, not a separate project. Start with your highest-value services and the five to ten questions buyers ask before they call. Build or rewrite one page per service so it answers those questions plainly. Then keep your Business Profile, reviews and listings tidy. We walk through the citation side in more detail in LLM SEO: how to get recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google.

Whether you run a shop in Northeast Ohio or sell nationwide, the order is the same: fix access, answer clearly, prove trust, then measure. No file, plugin or markup trick guarantees an AI citation.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It refers to optimizing your content so answer-based tools, including Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, can understand it, trust it and use it as a source when they build an answer.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, which are standard SEO requirements. If your site cannot be crawled or ranked, it is unlikely to be cited. Think of SEO as the foundation and AEO as the way you shape content for answers.

Will blocking AI training hurt my visibility in AI answers?

Not necessarily. The vendors treat training and answers separately. Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search, and OpenAI says GPTBot is independent from OAI-SearchBot, which controls ChatGPT search. Bing, however, says disallowing grounding can reduce visibility in AI experiences. Review each control on its own before changing your robots.txt.

Do I need special schema or an AI text file for AEO?

For Google, no. Its AI features guide says there is no special structured data or new machine-readable file required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data can still help search engines understand your pages, but Google asks that it match the visible text. Clear writing and accurate business information matter more than any single markup.

How long does AEO take to work?

There is no fixed timeline, and no one can promise when or whether an AI tool will cite you. Technical fixes such as unblocking a crawler can be picked up fairly quickly; OpenAI notes robots.txt changes for search can take about 24 hours. Content and trust improvements usually build over months, so measure monthly and look for trends.
